"Art is born out of an ill-designed world".
Andrei Tarkovsky
Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) was a Soviet screenwriter and film director responsible for directing short and feature films with a dreamlike and philosophical character. His unique vision of cinema led him to be considered one of the most influential filmmakers in history.
Tarkovsky captured much of his conception of cinema through various theoretical writings, which are compiled in the book “Sculpting in Time,” published in 1985. This work explores topics such as the purpose of art, the relationship between the artist and the audience, the moral responsibility of the artist, and the differentiating elements of cinema compared to other art forms.
The Soviet filmmaker took several photographs between 1979 and 1984, capturing everyday scenes and natural spaces of all kinds that can be considered reminiscent of his cinematic work. Many of these photographs were compiled by Giovanni Chiaramonte in the book “Instant Light: Tarkovsky Polaroids,” published in 2002.
